Change is afoot in the magazine industry. As of March 2009, Canada Post will cease to subsidize mailing costs for magazines. That’s 15 million dollars that publishers will no longer have as a resource to help offset the cost of mailing.

To address this issue and more, the Department of Canadian Heritage recently hosted a series of roundtable discussions to seek input on a proposed redesign of the Publications Assistance Program, which subsidizes mailing costs of magazines and non-daily newspapers, and the Canada Magazine Fund. The department intends to redesign the PAP and CMF and has published a discussion paper outlining a proposed new plan.

While the roundtables were limited to invited guests, anyone can send in written comments on the discussion paper.
